Research Questions

What are the various strategies which parents and millenial use when adopting a new technology like IoT?

Are there any various mental models which play a role in influencing adoption strategies for IoT.

How is privacy perceived across different generations of IoT existing and potential users?

I am trying to explore such questions as I collaborate with Dr. Pamela Wisniewski, Dr. Xinru Page and my advisor Dr. Bart Knijnenburg.

Experimental Study and Initial Results

Semi Structured interview of 19 parent-children pairs.

Questions asked in interviews delved into understanding how they adopt to IoT technology, what kind of privacy concerns they have towards IoT.

In this study, we plan to employ Contextual Integrity theory to investigate privacy concerns and adoption strategies for IoT.

In general, the adoption of IoT can be Agentic versus User centric in nature.

Agentic view refers to a mental model where the eventual and final control of Smart Environment is mediated by a smart agent in IoT systems.

User Centric model draws upon a situation where the users want to make the final control of the environment and is not mediated by any facilitating agent.

We discuss our findings in a more detailed manner in our paper which is currently under approval stages of PACM IMWUT journal. Please send me an e-mail to know more about this study.
